What is System Data on iPhone?

System Data is iOS's own caches, logs, temporary files and leftover update files. No app can delete it directly, including PhoneDiet. Restarting your iPhone, installing iOS updates and clearing Safari history usually shrink it, and iOS removes caches automatically when space runs low.

Using iOS's built-in tools

  1. Restart your iPhone. This often clears leftover update files.
  2. Install any pending update in Settings › General › Software Update.
  3. Clear browsing data in Settings › Apps › Safari › Clear History and Website Data.
  4. For apps with big caches (streaming, social, messaging), delete and reinstall them.
  5. As a last resort, back up and use Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone.

The faster way with PhoneDiet

  1. PhoneDiet doesn't touch System Data. It frees space where you control it: photos and videos.
  2. Freeing a few gigabytes of photos also gives iOS room to tidy its own caches.

Be wary of apps claiming to clean System Data, junk or cache on iPhone. iOS sandboxing doesn't let apps do this.

Common questions

Why is my System Data so large?

Usually caches from streaming and social apps, logs, and update files. It goes up and down on its own.

Can a cleaner app delete System Data?

No. On iOS, apps can't access system files or other apps' caches.
