iPhone storage full? How to fix it

When your iPhone says storage is almost full, check Settings › General › iPhone Storage to see the biggest categories. Clear large videos, duplicate and similar photos, and old screenshots first, then empty Photos › Recently Deleted. If System Data is large, restarting and updating iOS usually shrinks it.

Using iOS's built-in tools

  1. Go to Settings › General › iPhone Storage. Note the two or three largest categories in the bar.
  2. If Photos is near the top, review videos and duplicates in the Photos app (Media Types › Videos, Utilities › Duplicates).
  3. If an app is near the top, open it and remove downloads or saved media inside the app, or offload it.
  4. Empty Photos › Utilities › Recently Deleted so the space is released straight away.
  5. If System Data is large, restart your iPhone and install any iOS update; see our System Data guide.

The faster way with PhoneDiet

  1. Open PhoneDiet. The home screen shows your free space and how much it found to review.
  2. Start with the biggest card, usually Large Videos or Duplicates.
  3. Review the pre-selected items, untick anything you want to keep, and tap Delete.
  4. Follow the three steps on the done screen to empty Recently Deleted and get the space back now.

Avoid apps that promise to clean junk or boost your phone. On iOS, apps can't reach other apps' data; what actually works is clearing your own photos, videos and files.

Common questions

What happens when iPhone storage is completely full?

You can't take new photos or install updates, and apps may struggle to save data. iOS also starts removing cached files on its own to keep the phone working.

Do I need to buy more iCloud storage?

Not necessarily. iCloud and iPhone storage are separate. If iCloud Photos is on, deleting unwanted photos frees space in both.
